Announcing the 2016 Fischoff Competition Winners

 
Out of 49 competing ensembles from across the nation and around the world, the Ulysses Quartet has won the coveted Grand Prize of the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition ($7,500) and the Gold Medal ($3,500) in the Senior String Division. WindSync captured the Gold Medal ($3,500.00) in the Senior Wind Division. In addition to prize money, both ensembles will participate in a Winner’s Tour of the Midwestern United States this fall, and the Ulysses Quartet will perform several concerts in the Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy in 2017. Ulysses Quartet members include Christina Bouey (violin), Rhiannon Banerdt (violin), Colin Brookes (viola), and Grace Mei-En Ho (cello) are from New York, New York. WindSync of Houston, Texas. Members include Garrett Hudson (flute), Emily Tsai (oboe & English horn), Jack Marquardt (clarinet), Tracy Jacobson (bassoon), and Anni Hochhalter (French horn).
 

In the Senior Wind Division, the Silver Medal ($3,000) was awarded to QuinTexas of Austin, Texas. Members include Charlotte Daniel (flute), Freddie Blood (oboe), Nicholas Councilor (clarinet), Laura McIntyre (bassoon), and Rose Valby (horn). The Senior Wind Division Bronze Medal ($2,000) was awarded to Lineage Percussion of Athens, Georgia. Members include Trevor Barroero (percussion), Lauren Floyd (percussion), and Wesley Sumpter (percussion).
 
The Senior String Division Silver Medal ($3,000) went to Trio Zadig, Resident at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium, based in Paris, France. Members include Boris Borgolotto (violin), Marc Girard Garcia (cello), and Ian Barber (piano). The Senior String Division Barbara Shields Byrum Bronze Medal ($2,000) went to the Callisto Piano Trio of Pasadena Conservatory of Music/University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California. Members include Geneva Lewis (violin), Annie Jacobs-Perkins (cello), and Katelyn Vahala (piano). 
 
 
In the Junior Division (for musicians eighteen and under), the Gold Medal ($2,300) was won by Quartet Diamant of Midwest Young Artists Conservatory, Highwood, Illinois. Members include Masha Lakisova (violin), Rebecca Moy (violin), Natalie Clarke (viola), Adam Lee (cello). The Silver Medal ($1,800) was won by Noctis Quartet of New York, New York. Members include Kevin Zhu (violin), Andrew Kim (violin), Jacob van der Sloot (viola), and Chase Park (cello). The Bronze Medal ($1,300) went to Vibrante String Quartet of The Academy of the Music Institute of Chicago, Evanston, Illinois. Members include Zachary Brandon (violin), Hannah White (violin), Freya Irani (viola), and Leevy Williams (cello). The Junior Division Wind Prize ($500) was won by KGT of Merit School of Music, Chicago, Illinois. Members include Maddy Deanne (flute), Amer Hasan (clarinet), and Quincey Trojanowski (bassoon). Sponsored by the American Brass Quintet, this award honors the most outstanding wind ensemble in the Junior Division.

Announcing the Winners of the 2015 Fischoff Competition

NOTRE DAME, IN (May 10, 2015) – Out of 49 competing ensembles from across the nation and around the world, the Zorá String Quartet has won the coveted Grand Prize of the 2015 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition ($7,500.00) and the Gold Medal ($3,500.00) in the Senior String Division. Mirasol Quartet captured the Gold Medal ($3,500.00) in the Senior Wind Division. In addition to prize money, both ensembles will participate in a Winner’s Tour of the Midwestern United States this fall, and the Zorá String Quartet will perform several concerts in the Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy in 2016. Zorá members Dechopol Kowintaweewat (violin), Seula Lee (violin), Pablo Muñoz Salido (viola) and Zizai Ning (cello) are from Bloomington, Indiana. Mirasol Quartet members James Barger (soprano saxophone), Andrew Reinhart (alto saxophone), Benjamin Still (tenor saxophone), and Ben Donnell (baritone saxophone), are from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas.
 
In the Senior Wind Division, the Silver Medal ($3,000) was awarded to Kenari Quartet of Indiana Unviersity, Bloomington, Indiana. Members include Bob Eason (soprano saxophone), Kyle Baldwin (alto saxophone), Corey Dundee (tenor saxophone) and Steven Banks (baritone saxophone). The Senior Wind Division Bronze Medal ($2,000) was awarded to Prismatics Woodwind Quintet, from Rice University, Houston, Texas. Ensemble members include James Blanchard (flute), Tamer Edlebi (oboe), Nicholas Davies (clarinet), Markus Osterlund (horn), and Isaac Schultz (bassoon).

The Senior String Division Silver Medal ($3,000) went to the Calla Quartet, whose members Michaela Wellems (violin), Amelia Dietrich (violin), Aiden Kane (viola) and Karissa Zadinsky (cello) study at The Colburn School, Los Angeles, California. The Senior String Division Barbara Shields Byrum Bronze Medal ($2,000) went to the Autana Trio of Cleveland, Ohio. Members include Yuri Noh (piano), Ruben Rengel (violin), and Anna Bowman (cello).

In the Junior Division (for musicians eighteen and under), the First Place Medal and Scholarship of $2,300 was won by the Incendium Quartet of The Colburn School and Pasadena Conservatory, Los Angeles, California. Geneva Lewis (violin), Mei Zhan (violin), Emma Wernig (viola) and Atticus Mellor-Goldman (cello). The Second Place Medal and Scholarship of $1,800 was won by the Trio Adonais of the New England Conservatory Prep School Boston, Massachusetts. Members include Sammy Andonian (violin), Mari Nagahara (cello) and John Gibson (piano). The Third Place Medal and Scholarship ($1,300) went to the Alegrar Quartet of Barratt Due Institute of Music, Oslo, Norway. Members include Inga Vaga Gåustad (violin), Oda Holt Günther (violin), Michael Andreas Grolid (viola) and Brage Botn Seim (cello). Honorable Mentions went to the Isolde Quartet of New England Conservatory Prep, Boston, Massachusetts and Atara String Quartet of the Music Institute of Chicago.

The Junior Division Wind Prize and scholarship of $500 was won by Yumpadump Brass Trio of Merit School of Music, Chicago, Illinois. Members include Ricardo Zapata (trumpet), David Sweeney (horn), and Adriel Garcia (trombone). Sponsored by the American Brass Quintet, this award honors the most outstanding wind ensemble in the Junior Division.

42nd Annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition

Join us May 8-10 for the Fischoff Competition, held at the University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. Over the course of just three days, hundreds of young musicians will come from across the globe to vie for gold in this most prestigious of competitions.

New This Year

  • NPR’s hit radio show From the Top with Host Christopher O’Riley will be at this year’s Fischoff Competition taping a special program call From the Top Backstage at Fischoff. This program will be entirely dedicated to showcasing some of the nation’s best chamber musicians who are participating in Fischoff’s Junior Division. Through interviews, performances and backstage banter, the unique experience of Fischoff’s youngest musicians will be shared with 700,000 NPR listeners on June 15, 2015.
  • WNIT public television will present an enhanced live broadcast of the Grand Prize Concert, Sunday, May 10, at 3:30 p.m. Through multiple camera work, WNIT will capture the essence of the competition and its musicians.
  • Live streaming of 2 days of the Competition is estimated to reach 6,000+ global viewers.
