The saxophone is part of the woodwind family, however, it is the only woodwind that is made of brass. However, it is considered a woodwind because the sound is created by a reed.

The saxophone is a single reed instrument meaning it has one piece of cane bound to a mouthpiece that vibrates and creates sound when blown through.
The saxophone is an extremely versatile instrument. It can play in marching bands, jazz bands, concert bands, orchestras, or a chamber groups just like Aurelian Quartet!

At one point, there were 14 different types of saxophones ranging from contrabass to sopranino. Today, there are four different types of saxophones that are commonly used.

The saxophone is one of the only instruments created by just one person – Adolphe Sax!
Antoine-Joseph “Adolphe” Sax (1814- 1894), a Belgian inventor and musician who created the saxophone in the early 1840s.
Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1975, Fukuda Yosuke taught himself composing and arranging while attending junior high school. He served as director of his high school’s drama club, and upon graduation, began producing music for theatre, dance, cinema and television.
Currently he conducts, lectures, and composes for wind band!

This is the second year Gian has competed at Fischoff. Last year he and his other chamber group won the Fischoff Gold Medal. They were invited to perform in Los Angeles for an audience of students. See him surprise the crowd as he busts out some moves to a piece called Memory by Brazilian composer Marcelo Zarvos.
